Casa Mariposa is a family owned rustic guesthouse located
in the mountains with breathtaking views in San Gerardo de Rivas.

The Hostel

We offer 6 comfortable rooms with orthopedic mattresses and cozy comforters, including a backpackers dormitorio. We offer a community kitchen (equipped with oil and spices) where you can cook your own meals (and save a little money by not eating out!) There is a small grocery next door, as well as a restaurant if you don't want to cook for yourself. You can relax in our 3 sitting areas: In the comfortable living area, down by the creek next to a rushing waterfall, or in the hammocks at the treetop-view mirador and gazebo, where highland species birdwatching is excellent. We have trails right out the back door that lead to the Chirripó River!

    How to get here

By car: (4 wheel drive recommended) [See Map (pdf) ]
Going south on the Inter-Americana from San Isidro del General, turn left after the Maxi Bodega (about a kilometer from downtown). Continue to Rivas (10 km). When the pavement ends, turn right (follow the sign to Chirripo National Park) toward San Gerardo de Rivas (about 11 Km). In San Gerardo, continue past the church. Continue straight at the junction, crossing the Quebrada Chispa (Chispa Creek) and then past the Talamanca Reserve Resort. Cross the Chirripó River bridge, then continue up the steep hill for about 500 meters. We are located just past the Uran hotel. We are the last hotel in San Gerardo [ see Map], the closest to the Chirripó trailhead.

By bus: From the Mercado Central in San Isidro, take the San Gerardo de Rivas bus at 9:30 A.M. or 2.00 P.M. If you plan to hike Chirripó, get off the bus at the park office to buy tickets. Otherwise, get off at the last bus stop (at the soccer field). From here the hike up to the park entrance and Casa Mariposa is a beautiful walk crossing the Chispa and Chirripo River bridges. The last 300 meters is steep and a good preparation for Chirripo and cloudbridge hikes.
It is also a great opportunity to see highland bird species and our wonderful little pueblo. (If a ride up from the bus is required, please contact us to make sure we are available to do so).
(There is now a late bus at 6:45 P.M. but the park office is closed by the time you arrive and you will have to walk the 1.2 km up to the hostel if you take this bus. Sorry, but we are unable to come pick you up from the late bus.)
